Your Bio

Welcome. My name is Bryan Hix. I have been fascinated with taking pictures as a hobby since I was a boy. I saw sea lions off the coast of California and because they were so far away, I couldn't get a good photo of them and decided then I had to get a better camera. I bought my first camera, a Pentax K1000 when I was 11 years old by mowing lawns. I put the camera body and the lenses on layaway. It took me a year to pay for the camera body, a 50mm lens, and a 80-200mm zoom lens. I took photography classes in college and learned the basics of composition and film development. However, a few of years ago I switched to digital with Sony and Minolta lenses, but do to the lack of lens options, I have since switched and now shoot with Canon equipment.

I graduated from Central Michigan University in 1993 with a bachelor's of science degree in Biology. I live in the Chicago area with my wife and two kids and my real job is a Regional Business Director for a medical device company. In my spare time, I enjoy being out in the field with my camera as well as fishing, hunting, and generally anything that involves outdoor activity.

Birds have become my favorite subject because there are so many species and you can find them in every environment. I am trying to take more macro and plant photos on the days when the conditions are not ideal for bird photography. One thing I didn't anticipate was the amount of time I would be spending sitting in front of a computer. As a bit of a perfectionist, it has actually been pretty frustrating because it's difficult to just call it quits on a photo and move on. Still so much to learn about this hobby.......
